Special Workshops
We regularly hold special workshops with expert teachers and teachers from other local Samba bands. We learn rhythms that we can practice at our regular sessions, as well improving technique and hearing more about the background to the music.
Our next workshop will take place on May 8th 2010 and our teacher will be Barak Shmool from F-IRE collective, London. Barak will help us with our technique, and show us how samba percussion is used to accompany a samba song.
Barak Schmool is the founder of the F-IRE Collective. Barak is responsible for the drumming group, Rhythms of the City (samba bateria) which arose from years of education work at City University, Trinity Laban, Goldsmiths College, Royal Academy of Music and numerous community projects.Barak has also been a long-time member of Django Bates' big band Delightful Precipice as well as playing with Bosco De Oliveira, Nana Tsiboe, Robert Mitchell and Hilaire Penda (sax/perc). His own bands; Timeline (Afro-rhythmic jazz), Meta Meta (Cuban Bata fusion) and Synergy (14-piece Big Band) present music often integrated with dance. He has a deep understanding of how people learn percussion as well as championing the integration of Bateria style percussion with song, dance and melodic music.
What Does it Cost?
Saturday morning sessions cost £5 full and £3 concession. Whole Day workshops cost £15 full and £10 concession. Half day workshops cost £7.50 full and £5 concession
We are hoping that some members of the regular group will work towards becoming group leaders. You will need to be a more experienced drummer to be considered for this. Please call Beth 01332 345 508 if you'd like to find out about being one of our trainee leaders.
We need to charge for each session because we have costs to cover, including venue hire, instrument storage, repair and replacement of instruments, fees for people who lead the drumming, publicity to make the group as inclusive as possible, and in the future costume for playing at carnival. If you want further information, please contact Beth de Lange.
There are a few bursaries available for people who can't afford to pay the fee regularly, who want to be a regular member of the gorup. If you think you qualify for this, you should attend at least two sessions as a paying member, and then if you decide you really want to commit to regular attendance, you should contact to Beth de Lange (see contact us page).
Who can join in?
The group is open to all. Children under 11 must be accompanied by an adult.
