Djembe drumming sessions

Enjoy playing African rhythms in a group. Learn the basic tones and techniques, have a go at playing bass drums (djun djun, sangban and kenkeni), and learn support parts and solo phrases. Have fun playing your drum in a group. We will also use bells and chekere. The rhythms we play are generally from Guinea.

These sessions are led by Beth de Lange. Beth leads Calidoscópio carnival drummers and has some African rhythms to share that just don’t fit into the carnival drumming scene. Beth has been studying Malinke rhythms from Guinea, as played by Famadou Konate and Mamady Keita.

If you have a djembe bring it along. If you need to hire a drum make sure you get in touch so we can bring one for you (phone or text Beth 07837 671 988). The charge is £1 per session. If you are a complete beginner you are welcome. If you have some knowledge come along and share it!

Sessions take place every other Wednesday. Spring 2012 dates are:

  • January 11th and 25th
  • February 8th and 22nd
  • March 7th and 21st

Time: 8 - 10pm

Venue:
Chester Green Community Centre
Darley Playing Fields, Old Chester Road
Derby DE1 3SA

Cost: £5 full or £3 concessions (self-selected)

If you want to drum every week, our sessions alternate fortnightly with the Ashby African Drumming Group. To find out more about their group visit Ashby African Drummers
